Overview
Learn more about the Gullah Geechee people, their language, traditions and their cuisine. The Gullah Geechee people are descendants of Africans who were enslaved on the plantations of America’s lower Atlantic coast. Many came from the rice-growing region of West Africa, and the nature of their enslavement on isolated island and coastal plantations created a unique culture with deep African retentions. These are clearly visible today in the Gullah Geechee people’s distinctive arts, crafts, foodways, music, and language.
Gullah-style food lay the foundations for modern American soul food and coastal Southern American cuisine, utilising an abundance of fresh seafood, field peas, okra, and greens with myriad seasonings and spices. This culinary experience may inspire and inform your own cooking upon your return, letting you take a taste of your travels home with you.
